I'm sad to say, we had to say goodbye to Piper on Saturday. I'm gutted, obviously, but I have to be honest, I know it was the merciful choice.
We made the decision on Thursday AM to make a Saturday appointment, then on Friday, I saw something that gave me pause.
I went out to my car to get something, and as I was walking back to the house, I saw an approximation of this:

Piper would often come to the front door to greet us when we were heading in from the street. I thought, maybe if she came to check on me, maybe she wasn't feeling so bad.
But she was, and after a brief visit with Dr. Gansberger on Saturday morning, we made the choice to end her suffering. Lung cancer means breathing trouble, and I saw enough of that with my mother.
We fell apart intermittently throughout the weekend, so I'm glad we had the time to just deal with our new normal. I put it on social media, which is like ripping off the band-aid.
It doesn't hurt that, due to some ongoing construction, I am working from home all week. I also have my show this week, and in anticipation, some of us are going to do an open mike on Tuesday. I am also very grateful that I am not training a new hire class this week. I get a break until the 19th.
Oh. and, we're going to the movies in the next few weeks - not once, but twice, to see an old movie called The Devils. Not my exact cup of tea, but the things we do for love. They matter.
We also have a soccer game, and we have my birthday to celebrate. And Halloween. So, life goes on. Sans dog, but it goes.
I'm sure I'll talk more about it - but I wanted to put it in the record.
