I recommend to young people, have a go-to drink when you're out and being social. I like a rum and diet with lime. Ron con Coca-Cola Azucar Zero y Limon? Cuba Extra Libre? Whatever. I also, as far as brunches are concerned, like a nice Bloody Mary. It's a good way to get a little roughage with your meal. Sure, I like a Mimosa, but they give me worse heartburn than the Mary. I know, it's nuts. I think the olives soften the blow. And boy, does it blow.
All of this to say, I went to Savannah this past weekend with nine sorority sisters, and I am still basking in the sparkly afterglow.
We talked. We talked a lot - about things that matter to us, and to each other. I read one book on the plane down, started one that I traded the read one for on the way back. I hope to finish it tonight. I am going to be doing a lot more reading in the coming year.
We ate both mediocre and great food. The best meal was fish and chips at The Wexford - an Irish pub. I mean, it was the best fish and chips I've ever eaten, hands down - and that includes Alaska and Seattle. Even the mediocre food was offset by excellent company. Three of the women there were a little older, and so I didn't know them in college - they had already graduated. But I connected with them as much as some of the folks I already knew. In fact, one gave me a ride to the airport. I liked that a lot.
It was a sharp contrast to the start of last week. Someone hit my parked truck then drove off without leaving a note.
It absolutely put me into a spin. Like, who does that? It just sort of shook my faith in humanity, which, let's face it, was already a little unstable. A few days later, one of the people in my training class complained about having to take the class, thinking her microphone was off.
But as you may know - something that seems maddening and tragic at the moment can age into a fine whine, and becomes hilarious. This second one was that. Now, I did handle it with a professional response as well - because that's who I am, but I also know that these things only serve as material for my later adventures. Fodder, if you will.
And the truck goes into the shop tomorrow for repair. Thanks, State Farm. I opted for a rental because life is too short to have to depend on someone for a ride. And who knows how long it will take. It's minor damage, but if you've ever had body work, it doesn't matter. As soon as you pull into the shop, it's going to start adding up. But the dang thing has less than 40K miles on it - it needs to be made pretty and whole again.
We are starting to plan going to see our nephew graduate. We'll also add some other side quests. First, we have to decide how long we can go, and how much we can spend. I mean, travel costs a little cheddar, but it's worth it. The trip to Savannah was a good reset. I hope that California will do the same.
