Dispatches from the Side

Well, hello there.

We have nearly a week in the books at the new office.  Here's what I can tell you so far:

1.  There is a dearth of general retail in the area.  There are two gas stations with attached mini-marts.  They're both kind of dingy.  Serviceable, but not exactly inspiring.  There is a shopping center, filled with music venues and souvenir/antique/shabby chic shops.  The one bright spot is a massage school that offers $39 hour-long massages with a student.  I have availed myself, and it's decent.  But as for popping out for a birthday card or a bag of Pepperidge Farm Brussels, it's not happening.  At least not yet.

Superior in every way to Milanos.

2.  The beverage sitch is a mixed bag.  The local McDonald's is going to be my source for caffeine in the mornings - they have Diet Coke, rather than Zero.  That's not ideal, but they have unsweet tea and Diet Dr. Pepper, and those are both just fine.  Given that it's been barely above freezing much of the week, this is not a huge issue.  It's not great, but it's fine.

3.  The food is... well, there's food available with a little effort.  Not nearly the variety and convenience of Brentwood, but I think that will work to my advantage, eventually.  I need to get some groceries in the house this weekend.  That includes prepping snacks and bringing my lunch in.  This is all do-able.

4. The space itself is marvelous.  Airy, light and clean.  I'm sitting with my people, and we seem to be able to work well together.  It feels like home.

5.  While I had worried that the commute would be terrible, it has been a breeze.  Thanks to the modern miracles of GPS, I have gotten to work and back each day expediently.

6.  Getting to Franklin is a challenge.  I had to go re-do some blood work at my doc's office on Tuesday.  It was a total pain.  But it's done, and thankfully, I don't have to do it again for another six month, unless the results are bad, in which case, all bets are off.

7.  I do miss lunch with Jim, but I'll figure all that out eventually.  And so will he.

8.  I have so many photos that need taking.  More like this:

In news that has nothing to do with the new building:

1. The family arrives for a weekend trip on Saturday around noon.  We'll be watching the UGA game together and we also have brunch planned for Sunday.  After that, I need to get groceries.  Please see point #3, above.

2. I am waiting to hear back from a friend I reached out to earlier in the week.  Nothing major, just checking in.  Basically, it's all about whether I'm the only one invested in the friendship or not.  If so, then I can peace out peacefully.  If you're reading this, it's not you.  Trust me.  Unless, it is you, and why on earth haven't you reached out to me???  Come on!

3.  The season of dry skin and dry hair has begun.  This is in tandem with a lot of dusty housework (prepping for the UGA watch party), and I feel sort of desert like - prickly, arid, and slightly dangerous.

4. I am not dangerous.  But don't tell anyone that.

5.  If I don't get back into my healthy eating habits again soon, I'm going to lose my mind.  I miss vegetables.

That's pretty well it from me, from here.

Be young, foolish and happy everyone.

And drink plenty of water.  Use lotion, chapstick.

And don't be afraid.
