Let me eat cake

Hello, yeah it's been a while.  Not much, how 'bout you?

If you get that reference you're at least as old as I am, and more to the point, as old as my husband, who turns 45 today.

He never would tell me what kind of gift he might like, and so once again The Belcourt saves the day.  Last year, he got a series of passes to an Essential Westerns Festival they were showing during the late summer, early fall. He likes the Westerns.  They are not a genre I'd pick on my own, but I'll say that I loved High Noon (the original), Johnny Guitar, and The Ballad of Cable Hogue.

I thought The Wild Bunch was decent, but a little long.

I hated The Searchers.  Also overly long.  And too much John Wayne, not nearly enough Natalie Wood.

I liked the Coen Brothers True Grit better than the original.  I liked both, though.

That's all I can remember off-hand, but I've seen many.

He also likes the whole Film Noir genre - again, I've seen many - I think I prefer them to Westerns because there are typically more female characters - and while they aren't always too fleshed out (the dame/the skirt), when they are, they're really solid.  Plus, the costumes.

Another time, I gave him passes for a Hitchcock Series.  We saw Rope on New Year's Eve - it is one of the ones that doesn't get nearly the love it should.

Anyway, tomorrow we're going to a screening of the new Quentin Tarantino movie, "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood".  It's showing in 35mm, and I think it should be a lot of fun.

In addition, he's getting dinner from Gabby's tonight, a birthday card, and a cupcake.  I am also getting one.  See below.

Because life is short, and cupcakes are delicious.

Well, hello there!

And birthdays are for celebrating.

Sure, 45 isn't 40 or 50, but it's smack-dab in the middle.

Other than that - a great week at work - really affirming and energizing.

And another week of healthy eating in the books - well, minus this weekend, and that is more or less under control, cupcake aside.

But here's the thing.  I'm not going to never have another cupcake ever again.

I'm also not going to have two every day for the rest of my life - unless they come up with a pill that lets me eat as crappy as possible but burns all my calories without side effects.  Unless they're cool ones like I can charge my phone by putting it near my heart.

That won't happen.

Anyway.

Happy Friday!

Darn it, I'm three days late to wish your husband a happy birthday, and if I could I'd deliver each of you a cupcake as a form of penance.
Hooray for The Belcourt. And for film noir. And for Rope. It's fun to watch that one just for all the times the camera was clearly running out of film.
